Notes from teleconferences

30 November 2010

  • invited: Arlin, Rutger, Hilmar, Paula Mabee, Peter Midford

topic: phenoscape interop phenotype annotations working group collaboration

what are the interop targets? what are the platforms? who are the players? why NESCent?

pre-discussion

  • apply to RCN
  • can commit to send someone to hackathon

Phenoscape project

  • anatomy and phenotypic trait ontology
  • character-state vs. EQ
  • half of time spent developing ontologies
  • importing ZFIN data (uses EQ)
  • also mouse group does this
  • phenoblast

Interop challenges

  • integrative queries: all the fish that have lost eyes; what are the locations of blind animals;
  • specimen vouchers
  • associate phenotypes with images (cf. Greg Riccardi); want to pull in images from morphbank or paleodb or morphster
  • mesquite module for EQ annotation

Post-discussion

  • 18 K for wg meeting

Arlin, Mark Westneat

  • yes to wg membership
  • toolset with interoperable parts
  • v graphical interface to aggregate and explore data
    • what's missing is the way for a naive end-user to take advantage of that
    • stakeholders meeting of interop technologists with end-users and interface designers to design the viz environment for trees, then work backwards to the strategy to get there
